For once, her class survived until lunch without any major dramas. While not yet feeling exactly comfortable, Jennifer definitely felt that she was starting to get the hang of managing them, and even though at times she still felt like the invisible woman Mark had created, other timesâsuch as when she had to step in to prevent a fight over a tub of green poster paint between two boysâshe felt more real than she had in a long time.
She was still a work in progress, but Angelaâs words echoed in her head.
As the bell rang for lunch and the kids put away their art supplies, Gavin Gordon approached he desk.
âMiss? Can I talk to you?â
âSure.â
He waited until the rest of the kids had headed either to the dining hall or the playground before giving a little cough.
âMiss ⦠Iâve decided who I want to be on my management team for the festival.â
âYes?â
Gavinâs cheeks reddened. âFirst, Paulââ
âPaul Lemon? Is that wise?â
âHeâs strong. He can carry stuff.â
âWell, okay.â
âAnd you said there had to be at least one girl. So, uh, Kel and Bec.â
His cheeks were so red now Jennifer could have plucked them from a vine and put them up for sale in Tesco.
âOkay ⦠have you asked them about this?â
âThey said whatever.â
âWhich means yes?â
Gavin shrugged. Jennifer figured she would just have to assume that a positive response had been returned unless told otherwise.
âAnd one more ⦠because you said five. Uh ⦠Matt.â
âExcuse me? You mean Matt Bridges?â
âYeah.â
âThe boy youâve picked on sinceâby all accountsâthe first year?â
Gavinâs head shot up. âI donât pick on him!â
âThatâs not what literally every child or teacher has ever told me, Gavin. If youâre hoping this will give you a chance to bully him, I wonât stand for it.â
Gavin gave a frantic shake of his head. âNo, itâs not like that. Itâs ⦠well, he has neat handwriting. He can do the price labels. And heâs good at maths. He can do all the adding up and looking after the money.â
Jennifer smiled. âI suppose that makes sense. Have you asked him yet?â
âNot yet. Maybe after lunch.â
âWell, youâd better hurry up about it. We donât have much time.â
âI know.â
As Gavin turned to head off for lunch, Jennifer cleared her throat. âAh, Gavin?â
âYes, Miss?â
She smiled. âThose are good choices. I think theyâll make a good team.â
Gavin looked at the ground but didnât smile. âThanks, Miss.â
âHowâs your mum?â
Gavin shrugged. âSheâs okay.â
âThatâs good. Go on, youâd better hurry up. Youâre missing playtime.â
